Story

This time last year I embarked on my first fundraising event for Charity, it turned out to be a great success raising over £1000 for a local animal welfare cause. I have since wanted to orchestrate an annual event to raise awareness for local causes and get our community more focused on helping those around us.

My aim is to run this event every year to unite our counties golf clubs in supporting the local causes and help generate localised awareness of these unique charities.

Who are we doing it for and why?

This year we are focusing the cause to The Poole Hospital Cancer Treatment Trust, this was set up in 1972 by Marjorie Lewis Manning it is independent of the NHS and helps all Dorset Hospitals in raising funds for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Currently the charity are working towards the purchase of a state of the art PET/CT scanner. This is very close to my heart as I am sure it is with a lot of you reading as with the worrying statistics that come with this illness means we all know someone close to us that has been effected by Cancer.

What are we doing to raise money?

This year I have successfully organised for 4 clubs to enter a team into the inaugural Summer Solstice Shield, we will be attempting to all play 4 rounds of golf in our club teams at 4 different golf courses over one day, that's 16 hours of carrying golf clubs up and down hills covering the distance of a marathon.

Each team will chose their two best scores from the 4 on each hole and total them over the day giving a final figure - we will also be challenging the teams individually for fund raising!

We will be starting at Knighton at 4:30am and finishing at Parkstone by 11pm at which point the scores will be totalled to present a winner of the Summer Solstice Sheild. We plan to continue this event every year to ensure that we can continue raising awareness for good causes in our local community. I have also organised a local videographer to follow us around for the day to capture our moments of excellence and despair, this will be working with to edit together a VLOG of our day to show everyone what we got up to.

I am very thankful to Broadstone Golf Club, Dudsbury Golf Club, Parkstone Golf Club and Knighton Heath Golf Club for allowing us to attempt this. They have kindly donated 16 free tee times per round to our event this enables us to give everything raised to the charity!
