Story
RARER THAN A UNICORN
The story of Owen (so far) from family and friends.
Owen is a remarkable man who I am proud to call my brother, uncle to his niece, our friend and Owen has lived his life to the full dealing with both autism and epilepsy so it was with a massive shock to us all when he was diagnosed with Waldenstrom which is a very rare form of lymphoma.
Owen has now undergone nine cycles of chemotherapy and quite a few hospital stays as a result of the side effects of this treatment. Although communication can be difficult at times for Owen we have all found that Owen has remained his uniquely brilliant self be it singing along to Elvis, treating the nurses in the Haematology unit with a song or ten, to referring the hospital as his cafe.
Owen has shown us all that with goodwill, spirit, encouragement and courage we can all like my brother adapt to the most challenging of rare circumstances no matter how many personal difficulties may be present, without it getting him down. We all hope that Owen's story covering this period of his eventful life will inspire other people through their own journey through treatment until recovery and beyond.
With this in mind Owen's family, carers, and friends have decided to enter the “GUNG HO” 5k obstacle coarse in Edinburgh on Sat 13th May 2017 in aid of WMUK. Our team will be called OWEN GOLDEN STARS and are going flat out to raise funds to help fight this rare lymphoma cancer but also to celebrate Owen completing his treatment, I am sure that the sight of this team crawling over the finish line will amuse Owen very very much in his own unique way.
