Lesley started running in 2017 following a conversation with a group of friends where they decided they would like to take part in the Great North Run. After a lot of hard work and effort they successfully achieved their aim and what’s more, Lesley got the “running bug”.

The running was brought to an abrupt halt in early 2018, when after a short period of feeling unwell, a visit to the GP’s and a number of tests, Lesley was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. This brought about our first ever visit to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. From this initial introduction we soon experienced what a special place that it is. Major surgery and an 8 day stay was then followed with 6 months of extensive chemotherapy treatment. The level of care shown by all the staff that we met was exceptional and of course the amazing skills and professionalism of the surgeons was of the highest order.  We never ceased to be amazed at how hard the nurses worked on the chemotherapy unit. They literally never stopped as they moved caringly between the many different patients that they were looking after, treating each one as individuals and always finding time to take an interest in them and their particular ‘stories’. Lesley had her final treatment in September 2018 and has continued to make steady progress. We return every 3 months for consultation and blood tests and things continue to go well. We thank God for all the surgeons, doctors, nurses, consultants and ancillary staff who have contributed to getting Lesley to where she is today.

Although Lesley is getting back into her running she is still on the road to full fitness, but when we were given the opportunity to take part in the 2019 Great Run (exactly one year on post-chemo) we jumped at the chance to raise much needed funds for The Chemotherapy Unit  that will help towards allowing others to get the help and care that we have experienced at this fantastic hospital.
