Story

My name is Paul Rose. I’m a zoo biologist with a passionate interest in the welfare and behaviour of captive animals and a fascination for flamingos. You can see my video and read my blog

Flamingos are at risk in the wild from human encroachment, from habitat loss and disturbance to their breeding areas.

I'm asking for your support for my research at Exeter University which will have a direct benefit to flamingo populations in the wild and captivity. Several of the proposed study species are already classified “endangered” or “near threatened”.

My research will use social network analysis to evaluate the importance of stable relationships that contribute to the longevity, reproductive success and good welfare for individual animals in managed groups.

Any support you can give to this work will help me to continue my research – and I’ll keep you posted with my progress !

Flamingos are well-known for their mass groupings and the  dynamics are key to successful breeding. Captive management of course places constraints on behaviour, breeding and welfare and, for successful breeding, zoos need to pay more attention to the importance of social grouping.

By comparing enclosure usage and behaviour, we will be able to advise zoos on what to provide in order to enhance active, social behaviours. At the moment much of the UK population of captive birds are aging and non-breeding; this research will go some way to help make captive flocks sustainable into the future and the use of specimens for ex situ conservation will be improved.
