Earlier this year, I pledged to run the Manchester and London marathons to raise money for
For Jimmy, a charity close to my heart which was set up after the tragic murder of local schoolboy, Jimmy Mizen. In April, Jimmy's parents took the decision to step down from For Jimmy and have gone on to set up their own charity, the Mizen foundation to continue to preserve the memory of Jimmy.
This has led For Jimmy to transition into a new charity, Smart Choices, which continues to focus on empowering young people, building safer communities and raising awareness of Jimmy's story. The Mizen family's strength, courage and vision has left a legacy of forgiveness, peace and hope and underpins the work of Smart Choices. The impact of Covid-19 on young and vulnerable people has influenced Smart Choices to develop online coaching initiatives and group workshops. They are also working in partnership with some of the most deprived London boroughs and offer programmes and interventions aimed at helping the most 'at risk' children and young people to break the cycle of youth violence.
As you may be aware, both this years marathons been cancelled due to concerns around coronavirus. I have been given the opportunity to defer my place, however I still have the chance to take part in a virtual race on October 4th and to ensure Smart Choices receive the vital funding they so urgently need. These last few months have left many young people isolated and at risk and they need the support of organisations like smart Choices now more than ever. Please support me on the occasion of the 40th London marathon and help me to help our communities safer.
