Pritesh Climbs Everest! (...almost) · 31 August 2013

We aim to provide high quality education for children in Indian, Nepali and Tanzanian communities; to enable livelihood opportunities within these communities; and to motivate the children to progress as far as possible with their education and contribute back to their communities

Story

I will be starting an incredible trekking journey lasting 12 days to Base Camp, Mount. Everest (5,364 metres) this September, with my friend Chris Lovejoy. We have never done anything like this before and so this will be an immense challenge! All money raised will go directly towards a cause I feel very strongly about - Education.....

Before the trek, I am travelling to Solsing School in a remote village in Helambu, Nepal to teach English. I am very passionate about education and after hearing about the opportunity to support schools in Helambu at my University, I couldn't refuse.

***As I will be the first student volunteer in this particular school (with my friend Chris), we will work closely with the teachers and village to decide how the money raised is spent. This will mean every donation of yours will be spent where it needed most.***

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Primary school participation is around 65-70%, whilst secondary school participation drops to 42%. Drop out rates are high due to costs associated with schooling.

Literacy and education is an invaluable means of empowering people to escape poverty, making people healthier, promote gender equality and raise income. For this reason, I believe any contribution helping children becoming educated is worthwhile.

The Helambu Education & Livelihood Project (HELP) (through the Mondo Challenge Foundation) has done some inspiring work to achieve this aim in several schools in Helambu.

Solsing - the school I am visiting - is currently building a new classroom, toilet and installing a drinking water supply. However, funding is needed for library books, desks and benches as well as sports and music equipment. Additionally, money for teachers is needed, which the government is unable to fund enough of in schools like this.

I plan to keep and update a blog before, during and after my journey. Though I will have limited internet access, I will try my best to post updates. Link coming soon!

Thank you so much for taking the time to donate and support my cause! I appreciate it!
