This is my daughter Isobel who has Rett Syndrome.
On 2nd of May, myself and five old school friends are planning to cycle the 160 miles of the ‘infamous’ Liège–Bastogne–Liège route in the Ardennes region of Belgium.
Now you might think of Belgium as a flat country (as over half of us did when the pub conversation first got out of hand) however, in the words of the great Moreno Argentin (4 times winner and former World Champion) "Riders who win at Liège are what we call fondisti — men with a superior level of stamina.” We certainly aren’t that, but we are committed to a cause that will hopefully power us up the hills and that is raising money for Rett UK.
Isobel was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome shortly after her second birthday, after a perfectly normal birth and early years. Now 10, she is unable to walk or talk and has complex needs. We are raising money on behalf of Rett UK, a charity that not only provides invaluable support for families like Isobel's, but is also committed to funding groundbreaking research into this severe genetic neurological disorder. (see short film below for more of 'Our Story')
Every 5 hours a girl is born with Rett syndrome, the most common genetic cause of severe disability in females, yet very few people have ever heard of it. Proven to be reversible, a cure for Rett is the first step to other linked genetic disorders like autism, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia.
Please help us to make a difference. Together we can help find the cure.
