Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On 17 September 2021 and close friend and I will begin our cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats. Mark and I will be riding unsupported, meaning that we will need to carry our own kit, clothes, spares and saddle sore cream on our bikes. Another friend, Roland, has been press-ganged into joining us for the first 4 days. The ride will take us 12 days, averaging 135 kilometres per day and we will cover 1600 kilometres with over 14,500 metres of vertical climbing. We had initially planned to do this ride in June 2020, but we all know what happened back then! We were also only planning to raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis UK in memory of my brother in law who died from bowel cancer in 2019

However, The Tamar Crossings have been working closely with The Samaritans for a number of years and I'd also like to be able support their vital work. The Plymouth, East Cornwall and South West Devon branch offers confidential support to those in emotional distress, including those at risk of taking their own lives.

As an organisation, we have seen first hand the impact that mental health issues and suicide can have on individuals, family and friends, and the loss of a close colleague to suicide recently really shocked me and many others. I wish they'd talked to someone, or talked to an organisation like Samaritans.

A big thank you to everyone who is able to offer their support through sponsorship, however small. It will mean a lot to Tamar Crossings and to Samaritans.

About the charity

Plymouth branch offers confidential support to those in emotional distress, including those at risk of taking their own lives. With no national funding it costs about £30k each year to keep the branch running, enabling us to support the national network and to reach out to our local community.
