As many of you already know, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and had surgery at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh in November. The surgery was a success and, although I am continuing to be monitored, my test results this far have all been encouraging.

Just in case you are unfamiliar with the extent of the issue:

  • Prostate disease will affect almost 1 in 2 men in Scotland at sometime in their lives.
  • 1 in 10 men in Scotland are at risk from prostate cancer.
  • It is the most common cancer of males in Scotland.
  • 1 in 5 men in Scotland affected by prostate cancer is likely to die from it.
  • The incidence of prostate cancer is projected to have increased by 35% by 2026.

Additionally, please let’s not forget all of those affected by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or Prostatitis . These can be chronic and debilitating diseases affecting 4 times more men than those suffering from prostate cancer. These non cancerous forms of prostate disease can affect some people for extensive periods either constantly or intermittently creating stress and pain for the individuals and upset for their family.

For more information please visit the Prostate Scotland website: https://www.prostatescotland.org.uk/

Thanks to Prostate Scotland patients undergoing surgery at the Western General can benefit from robotically assisted surgery which is significantly less invasive and may lead to quicker and easier recovery from the surgery.

I would now like to do my bit to help support future patients and their families, so I am asking you to please give generous support to my 96 mile West Highland Way walk, which I am undertaking from 28th August to 3rd September.

Thank you!

Richard
