Story

I have been very fortunate, the brain tumour only blinded me when it could so easily have been fatal. I have family and friends who support and encourage me and I Live in a society that understands the difference between incapable and disabled.

Others are less fortunate, those living in third world countries with a physical or mental disability are often thought of as cursed or possessed, being tormented in an attempt to drive out evil spirits. Even when parents understand the condition their child has, they may still do more harm than good as they try to protect their child, restraining blind children or locking them up to prevent them from hurting themselves.

The 'International Citizen Service’ (ICS) is a global volunteer organisation, aimed at young people, that sends volunteers from the UK to work with volunteers from organisations in third world nations. Their projects target three main areas: children, women’s rights and disabled rights.

This year I will go to Ghana to teach the Paralympic sport of goalball to some small communities in the northern region. The aim is to encourage young blind Ghanaians to exercise and to demonstrate to their communities the sort of independence that the visually impaired can enjoy, given the right support and encouragement.

As part of my volunteer commitment I have been set the challenge of fundraising for ICS, this money will allow ICS to pay for my travel and expenses,  as well as equipment we will be building in local communities and leaving as a lasting legacy.

This is my chance to give something back to the world that has been so good to me. please help me and give as much as you can. No donation is too small......or too large.

Thank you so much for your support.

Richard
