Story
Myself and my Stepdad are taking part in the 5k Skipton Santa Fun Run on Sunday 28th November. It’s not a big run, but it’s going towards a cause which is very close to mine and my family’s hearts…
Our youngest son, Ruben, was diagnosed with congenital cmv in October 2020. Cmv (cytomegalovirus) is a preventable virus often found in home and daycare settings. If the virus is caught primarily during pregnancy, this can cause devastating effects for your unborn baby.
Ruben has microcephaly, development delays, brain calcifications, epilepsy and visual impairment all from contracting cmv in the womb.
Women are not routinely screened for cmv during pregnancy, or made aware of the virus. Pregnant women can prevent catching cmv by doing some simple things like washing hands regularly, by not sharing utensils or kissing other younger children on the mouth.
Although our family have been affected quite severely by cmv, Ruby is the happiest little boy who brings joy to everyone who meets him. His smile lights up a room.
CMV Action UK need your help to raise the profile of CMV, which will help them achieve their ultimate goal- Educate, vaccinate, eradicate.
Nb. We will also be wearing Santa suits for the run!!
