Story

Thanks for visiting our page

SARDA Wales trains and deploys search dogs that work with Mountain Rescue and the police service across North Wales and beyond.  They are on call 24 hours a day every day to assist in the search for missing and vulnerable people.  The entire team is volunteers and is funded by team fundraising and donations.

For many years a group of SARDA Wales' supporters organised the final feeding station of the Snowdonia Marathon, Tafarn 24.  To make it special for the participants, who have just completed the hardest climb on the course, they have a  theme each year and serve tea and cakes in addition to the more conventional supplies.  It certainly brings a smile to the tired faces arriving there through the cloud and mist to see, hear and often join in the party atmosphere.  There is, however, a serious side in that SARDA receive a £500 donation to thank them for their support, often topped up with £100 prize for the most popular feeding station!

This is a year of many challenges and  Marathon Eryri, as with many events, has been forced to adapt. The marathon has gone virtual and the organisers are doing a fantastic job in trying to support their primary charity. Unfortunately, however many of the local charities, who run the feeding stations, that benefit from their support have lost a valuable source of income this year and our Tafarn 24 team have lost their jobs for the year.

Given that the crew who run Tafarn 24 now have a free weekend they have decided to use it to run the virtual event! The people behind last year's White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee,  Dormouse and Cheshire Cat are forming a 4 person relay team to participate.  They aren't runners but love the event and are making the most of the opportunity to see what it's all about before normal service is resumed next year.

Several other members were supposed to run the real race. Kes, the SARDA Wales treasurer, will be running a full marathon before going to work, although I'm sure she'll be disappointed that she can't get a brew at the site of Tafarn 24. John and Helen, two of our bodies, are doing a 2 person relay team, and I know for sure will miss the cake at Tafarn 24.

If you could help us reach our target with a donation, no matter how large or small, you will help enable the team to keep carrying out their important work returning missing people to their families.

Thanks once again, all at SARDA Wales
