We support Asian Elephants to ensure greater welfare and care

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Mahouts Elephant Foundation is a UK registered
charity dedicated to improving welfare for captive working elephants, particularly in Asia and with a focus on Thailand.

The foundations philosophy of working collaboratively with mahouts and their communities to ensure all parties will benefit is unique, we have a clear understanding and appreciation that the elephant’s welfare is dependent on their mahouts and their living conditions. To fulfil the charities broad remit we focus on raising awareness and educating stakeholders on the important issue of elephant welfare. We also spend a considerable amount of time on the ground in Thailand visiting elephant camps and tourist attractions that feature elephants, spending time gathering research and data on the welfare of the animals, and compiling educational resources.

Alongside this work the foundation is busy with  the ‘Walking Elephants Home’ project, which is our latest success. This project enabled two elephants to be taken from a tourist camp and returned back to the forest near to their mahouts village, it takes into account the needs of the local village community whilst still putting animal welfare at the forefront of its agenda, and this on-going project successfully combines animal welfare with community-based tourism by providing tourists with the opportunity to reside in a home-stay in the village. This is a fantastic opportunity for guests to witness and learn about Asian elephants in their natural environment whilst also having the opportunity to learn about the local traditions and culture of the Karen hill tribe.

The project is now successfully supporting FOUR beautiful elephants to live deep in the vast forest surrounding the village.

On the 28th November 2015 a beautiful baby boy was born in the forest he surprised everyone with his early arrival. He was small but strong and continues to thrive living with his family. We had the great honour of naming him and finally settled on the name Sunti which means Peace in Thai. This completely describes the very essence of our work and the life we want our elephants to live.

Sunti quite rightly is creating a LOT of extra work !!!!. We have taken on an extra mahout to help with the work load and to help take care of Sunti and his family. They are in the forest but we need to keep a close eye on him while he is so young.

Supporting Four elephants and their mahouts to live deep in the forest is an ongoing commitment, we are planning to bring more elephants back to join this ground breaking project and need your help.

We are now raising funds to help us with the extra care Sunti requires which is taking on an extra mahout. The amount required will cover this care for 6 months from the time of his birth.

We rely completely on donations and cannot do this without YOUR HELP !!

Thank you SO much for your support and faith in our work,

From the whole team at Mahouts Elephant Foundation xx
