Story

Last autumn, I set myself a challenge to complete the Couch to 5k programme. As a complete running novice with almost no basic fitness and as someone who would ‘only run if I was being chased’ (and would struggle if that was for more than 45 seconds!), my goal of running 5km seemed almost insurmountable.

Over the last few months I have been chugging my way through the programme. It’s been such a challenge and at times I have really doubted myself. However, I managed to ‘dig deep’, carry on and completed the programme in December 2020.

The sense of triumph when I have achieved the goals throughout the programme has been amazing, and I was so proud of myself when I ‘graduated’ and ran for the full 30 minutes. I still can’t quite believe that I can actually run!

The whole process made me reflect upon my ability to push through and carry on, even when I doubt myself. It reminded me of the strength that I had forgotten I have.

I wanted to do something to mark my completion of the programme and set myself a goal of running 5km. I was able to run for the full 30 minutes, but not quite making the 5km distance. So I have carried on my training in earnest.

On to my challenge - I have decided to run 5km in memory of our first daughter, Jessica, who was stillborn in 2013. It’s another period in my life when I found that I had strength that I didn’t know I had, so it seemed appropriate. I would absolutely love to raise some money for the wonderful charity Philip’s Footprints.

Philip’s Footprints offer support to parents who have lost a baby, through memory boxes, remembrance services and peer support. Further information about this and their important work around safer pregnancies and improving outcomes for Jersey babies can be found here: https://www.philipsfootprints.org/about

I will never forget how supported we were by Philip’s Footprints in the days after Jessica’s death and birth. The memory box is a wonderful thing and helped us to make the most of the precious time we had in the face of the worst tragedy. Leaving hospital with that box meant that I didn’t leave hospital with empty arms, and for that I will be forever grateful.

I will be running 5km on Saturday 23 January 2021, close to the date of Jessica’s birthday. I’ll record the run in my workout app and will post the results. If you can spare any money to support this wonderful charity then I would be so very grateful.

Thank you so much to my husband Ollie, my other wonderful daughters, Mum and Dad and my friends and family for their support and encouragement.

I know that to many people 5km isn’t far, but to me it was absolutely unbelievable a few short months ago - thank you for supporting me in my challenge!
