Hello,

My name is Scott and just over a year ago my mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease; a progressive neurological condition which has no cure. The disease is caused by the deterioration of the nerve cells in the brain, reducing the release of the chemical dopamine. The loss of this chemical makes it difficult to move and will create tremors, stiffness and slow movement.

As well as the difficulty in movement, other symptoms include anxiety, depression, tiredness and impacts the ability to complete day-to-day tasks. The rate of which this disease progresses changes from each person and we still don't quite know why people get this condition.

Watching my mother struggle each day in a body that is starting to deteriorate has been really difficult. I'm really grateful for the help and support that Parkinson's UK has provided, so I want to fundraise in order to help this charity continue its support and fund research to find a cure.

I am determined in making a difference. Which is why this summer my partner, Aveline Rust, and I will be taking part in a challenging 10 day trek of the Great Wall of China on the 17th September 2015. As a couple we are paying all the costs of this trip ourselves, so 100% of donations will go to Parkinson's UK. 

There isn't much awareness surrounding the condition, yet, 1 person for every 500 has it, that's around 127,000 people in UK alone. Therefore my main goal is not only to raise money, but also to make more people aware.
