Boston Marathon (see below), the veteran but all-conquering Selwyn crew will be taking to the water once again to enter Senior Fairbairns

The current crew is: Robin Hellen, Huw Champion, Alex Goold,
Hugh Wood, Richard Ingram, Clare Heppenstall, Penelope Jarret-Kerr, Nick Jones. Cox & Coach: Teresa Baron, (current SCBC overall captain).

*All sponsorship raised to support the Selwyn crew in either the Senior Fairbairns or the Boston Marathon will be matched up to a value of £15000 - all funds raised will contribute to Selwyn's New Boathouse Appeal.*

Boston Marathon

At 31 miles, the Boston Rowing Marathon, started as a bet soon after WWII, is the longest conventional rowing race in the UK rowing calendar, with only a few comparable events elsewhere in the world. Starting in the beautiful city of Lincoln and finishing in the even more beautiful fenland market town of Boston, where the Pilgrim Fathers were locked up en route to founding its Massachusetts outpost, it’s not normal territory for an SCBC crew. However, the temptation of the maroon and old gold was strong enough to persuade 8 alumni from across the years as far back as 1966, plus a ringer from Yorkshire with full first aid training, to try it. Mostly ex-1stVIII members, only 3 of whom are still involved in rowing, they were looking for a bit of a challenge and a way of celebrating SCBC as a small but energetic part of Selwyn’s life, as well as making an unusual contribution to the Appeal.

The final crew  was Clare Heppenstall, Penelope Jarrett-Kerr, Rob Hellen, Alex Gould, Hugh Wood,Matt Sloan, Ian Yates (our guest from Yorkshire), Huw Champion and cox Peter Jones – with help over the training period from Richard Medd (1954), Richard Ingram (2004) and Club Captain Nick Jones. They raced on Sunday 20thSeptember, covering the 50k in 4hrs 23 minutes, and recovering over the next three days.
