Story
A Chance to help in Zimbabwe
“My name is Rudo Mutekedza and I am a qualified SRN. After completing my training as a stomaltherapist and wounds care nurse at the Groote Schuur Hospital in South Africa and the Christie Hospital in Manchester, I worked with the Cancer Association from 1989 to 2000. Due to the economic situation here, conditions at the Association deteriorated so much that, as donors emigrated, our income, on which we relied, dried up, staff went unpaid and patients were left stranded with no appliances or dressings and no one to look after them.
“Against this background, I decided to set up my own clinic in 2000. The plight of my patients made me stay in Zimbabwe when most medical people were emigrating; my leaving would have affected so many needy cancer patients, as I am now the only trained stomaltherapist in Zimbabwe. But, by 2007, with inflation soaring out-of-hand, we too were facing closure, just as the Association had done seven years before.
“It was then that a local priest, Fr Gerald McCabe, SJ, contacted Eagle Aid - the Jesuit former pupils’ charity in Britain - to ask for financial help for us. Within the year, they provided a new Mazda 4x4 truck, to help me reach my outlying patients and since then, they have sent me £1,000 a month to buy dressings, bandages and appliances for my patients and £500 a quarter to pay for the running costs of the Mazda”.
Can you HELP to keep this success story going? I need to increase the Clinic’s donation income so that we can meet all our operational costs. A donation of:
• £1,000 will buy enough consumables for a month;
• £ 500 will keep the Mazda on the road for 3 months;
• £ 150 will pay for 1 monthly treatment for one Urostomy patient, or
• £ 100 will pay for 1 monthly treatment for a colostomy patient.
• £ 50 will buy a box of 10 15g tubes of Granujel.
• £ 40 will buy 60 litres of ‘gas’ for the Mazda.
• £ 30 will buy a box of 5 10x10 cm Granuflex.
• £ 10 will buy a box of 10 large crepe bandages.
• £ 7 will buy a box of 10 small crepe bandages.
