Period shame is preventing women and girls from realising
their full potential around the world.
Anyone remember in school being terrified of getting a stain
whilst you were on your period? Or hiding your tampon up your sleeve as you went to the toilet because you didn’t want people to see it was ‘that time of the month?’ In the UK 1 in 5 girls have been bullied because of their period and 1 in 7 don’t know what a period is when they first start menstruating.
In Uganda over half of boys will not even talk to a girl if
they know she is on her period. 78% of girls and young women lack basic knowledge about their own bodies and what a period is and over half miss school during their period.
Doesn’t seem right? Not fair? Irise is working to change all
that! To be the generation to end period inequality and transform a cycle of shame into a cycle of empowerment that enables everyone to access the support, products and information they need to feel happy and healthy during their periods.
Irise’s Empower Period campaign aims to end period shame in
the UK by 2025 and replace it with a positive narrative. The campaign has already helped girls feel more confident about their periods and their bodies in UK and in Uganda, their projects have achieved a 20% reduction in girls missing school.
I’m doing a Tough Mudder to raise money for this incredible cause
because I can’t remember the last time I did proper exercise and the only time I run is for a bus, so not too long to get in shape enough so I can at least finish! I’m also going to be putting on film screenings, quizzes and food and drink events all with - you guessed it - an Empower Period theme! So watch this space…and come and be part of something amazing - to ensure no one is held back by their period.
