Living in Cornwall I have found that no matter what the issues are that I face, the best place for me to get away from it all is the beach. I served in the Royal Engineers before joining the Police, and having grown up in a military family, I feel passionately about our emergency services and armed forces.
During my 22-year career as a police officer I experienced many highs and lows, dealing with a variety of incidents over the years. As a hostage negotiator for 14 years I engaged with hundreds of people in crisis, including countless suicide interventions. Sadly in 2018 - whilst engaging with a suicidal female - she fell from cliffs to her death. The impact on me was profound, and led ultimately to my diagnosis of PTSD and my decision to leave the emergency services.
I came across Surf Action after seeing a news article and was blown away with the support they offer servicemen and woman and emergency services personnel, and their families. It’s a charity that is not only close to me geographically but also close to my heart as a novice surfer.
Like all charities they rely heavily on charitable donations and so in my own small way I wanted to do something to help with the exceptional work they do. I am taking part in the Lake District challenge: running, walking or even crawling over 100 km around stunning scenery. The event runs over two days although my intention is to complete the distance on day one.
I would really appreciate any donation, no matter how small as every single penny donated will be given to this fabulous charity to help and support our precious service personnel over the coming years.
