As a long term sufferer of Rheumatoid Arthritis, cycling has been my only means of escape from reality, giving me a freedom to forget the worries of a chronic illness. Cycling is the only physical activity I’m able to do, it helps keep my joints supple and my mind free.
In October last year I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, found by chance during a routine MRI in relation to my arthritis.
In November my thyroid and a large tumour was removed along with many cancerous lymph nodes. Then, in February this year I had radiation treatment to hopefully destroy any remaining cells. This has left me incredibly weak and unable to cycle long distances as I used to.
My two best friends and I have decided on the 4th of July to cycle from Edinburgh to my home town of Wakefield, and this year I would like donations to go to Ruddis Retreat who provide short UK breaks for people and their families who have been affected by cancer. They are a small charity and hopefully we can raise enough to send someone away so they can relax and recover from their condition.
The ride is 312 miles, taking in almost 21000 feet of elevation gain. We intend to take just four days to do this.
Please help me along my journey by donating to a very worthwhile cause.
