Story
On the 23rd of April I’ll be running the London Marathon to support the charity, Dockland Settlements, who work for local communities in London’s East end.
I lived in Stratford East when I started out as a musician, and had my first studio there. I had a relatively privileged time of it, but was aware of the poverty that many not far from me experienced. This was before the explosion of glittering office blocks, the chic flat conversions and coffee shops – the Olympic Park was a distant dream. My eldest two children were born in local hospitals when we moved near Manor Park, and have now moved back as young adults to this part of London.
Dockland Settlements has been working in London’s East end since 1894, initially helping unemployed young people in the dockland slums. These days the charity has broadened its scope. It runs centres in Stratford, Rotherhithe and the Isle of Dogs, offering low cost playcare that helps parents go back to work or remain in work. It also offers a variety of sports for kids, teenagers, adults and people with disabilities, as well as activities for elderly people to help tackle isolation or loneliness.
Help me support Docklands Settlements when I run in April!
