Story
Earlier this year, after the devastating earthquake in April 2015 and again in May 2015, more than 8000 people lost their lives, whole villages were wiped out and many communities were left devastated. The people of Nepal have lost a huge amount yet they remain strong and they remain resilient. They continue to stand up and they continue to smile.
18 months ago, a group of us had a dream, to trek to the top of Mera Peak at 6476m. After the earthquake, we weren't sure if we would be able to continue with the trek. However, as things settle down, we are now all determined to go more than ever. Because Nepal needs us more than ever.
Our challenge is not an easy one, and each of us now has to prepare mentally and emotionally as well as physically. As part of our challenge some of us also want to raise money for the people of Nepal. I have chosen Community Action Nepal for the work that it does with the local Nepalese community.
A lot of money has over the last couple of months poured into Nepal for the immediate relief, rescue and help needed in Kathmandu. This is however all short term. The role of CAN is for the long-term support, rebuilding and rehabilitation of the remote mountain communities. CAN ensures that all the donations go out to the project areas without deduction of any administration costs in the UK or in Nepal.
CAN is in the process of assessing damage to the schools its supports, the health posts, porter rescue shelters and community buildings. Although covering the immediate needs, they are also assessing longer-term needs and for those communities where it has been unable to get help quickly.
Please support me in some small way. I will do all the hard work, trekking up that little hill, you just have to do the easy bit. Help Nepal get back on its feet.
