Story

There’s nothing better than an exhilarating dip in chilly water. Take the plunge for One Woman at a time and emerge cleansed.

We are asking for your help during this ever-changing world. With forthcoming fundraising events cancelled for the foreseeable future due to Covid 19 we are creating fundraising events that you can still join in with even if we can’t all get together.

Be your own Superhero! On December 5th 2020 we would like you to dip waist high in outdoor water for 5 minutes dressed as your favourite superhero; it could be a character or a person you admire. Why not add to your dip and walk or run 5K before you dip and share the experience with friends and family (6 or under and adhering to Covid restrictions)

A letter from Jean, the founder of One Woman at a time;

Hello,

My name's Jean and I am the founder of One Woman at a Time. I've wanted to write a personal letter to thank all our donors, as frankly, due to Covid, I don't know what we would have done without you.

The girls were all sent home when lockdown commenced in March. This has resulted in unemployment, the inability to sell their produce causing mass poverty and hunger. The solution to this problem has been to turn to the one commodity they can sell and that is their daughters.

Mass FGM ceremonies and forced marriages have taken place all over West Pokot.

One sad story was of 13 year old Brenda. Brenda was abducted three years ago by her father and sold as fourth wife to a sixty year old elder. With courage and ingenuity she escaped and came to our attention. We gave her a place of safety and education for three years and her dream was to be a lawyer. On the day lockdown commenced, all children were sent with no notice home. She has not been heard from since. From this we created a project of liaising with all our girl’s parents and the village elders in actively protecting them through education and police involvement. Together with Kenyan activists we have started the first FGM training force and given out hunger relief packs.

I have often said that women don't need 'charity', all that is needed is a helping hand: a hand that will help them to their next empowering step, to make free choice, to be independent, support themselves and to stand proud.

With your donation, this is exactly what you're doing: giving your helping hand to one woman at a time.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Jean Anderson

Information and health and safety

You can dip in anything, the sea, a lake, a mere, a brook, a bucket filled with water in the garden, a cold shower. It worth checking letting your local authority know if not dipping at home. Please just make sure you only go waist high and be sure to take a snap and share on your social media linking to our pages,
Instagram one.woman.at.a.time or our facebook

Here’s the serious bit before you dip…..To avoid cold water shock, splash some cold water on your face, just 10 -15 seconds of this helps your body get use to the lower temperature and the shock passes.

Although they are fun these dips are not advisable for people who are pregnant or who have other health conditions including respiratory and heart.

It is also not advisable to enter the water whilst under the influence of alcohol or suffering from a hangover.

Wear the right kit! Wear a swimming hat to preserve body heat. You can also wear neoprene gloves, booties and balaclava. Please make sure fancy dress is suitable for going in water.

Take care if running into water – a mad run isn’t much fun if you twist your ankle.

DO not dive or jump in. Cold water can cause gasping of breath. Instead immerse yourself slowly.
