Story
We are raising money for the Tranverse Myelitis Society who helps to support those with a similar condition to our President, Ella Sezen, who has recently been diagnosed with Neuroptica Myelitis (NMO).
NMO is an autoimmune condition characterised by relapses of the optic nerves and spinal cord; that only affects 1000 individuals in the UK.
In December 2021, Ella initially began to lose all her sight and then shortly after became paralysed from the waist down. She got admitted into hospital, where she has been for the last 8 weeks. She has been improving every day, slowly being able to complete daily tasks.
It took a few weeks to diagnose Ella with NMO due to the rarity of the condition and the lack of awareness. Therefore, we chose to find a charity that looks to raise this awareness and support families affected by it. We found the Transverse Myelitis Society, whilst different from NMO, it is still a rare neurological condition that affects the motor and sensory tracts on both sides of the spinal cord.
We believe it is extremely important to raise awareness for these conditions as hopefully it’ll help those in the future if they are in a similar condition to Ella and help them get diagnosed quicker.
