Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My Mother, Elsie Harrison, was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2012. Despite the best efforts of the medical profession and care from lots of people she passed away on 7th December 2016 due to complications of the illness.

Having seen, at first hand, the effects of this awful condition on my Mother and family and friends I was inspired to support Alzheimer’s Society in their efforts to defeat dementia.

I have retired from my role as a P.E. Teacher and for many years have enjoyed cycling as a hobby, it was my 60th birthday in 2017 so decided to set myself, a challenge, something different, something I would find difficult. To this end I have decided to enrol in a task in 2018 to ride:

The 8 Hardest Sportives in the UK as advertised in cycling weekly.

This will be a hard slog but my friends and family will be helping. It will be a tremendous challenge but will be extremely rewarding to commemorate my Mother in this way and assist the Alzheimer’s Society.

Obviously donations are pretty crucial to this being worthwhile and a success, so any and all support would be absolutely amazing and gratefully received to help me raise funds for the charity.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

These figures below (from 2015/16) show how a donation could support the work of the Alzheimer’s Society in leading the fight against DEMENTIA

£5.50

could pay for a person with dementia to attend a session at a Dementia Café, where they can meet others in the same situation and talk about dementia in a comfortable environment, without fear of judgement.

£8

could pay for a person with dementia to attend a Singing for the Brain® session, which encourages social interaction and active participation in song to boost confidence and wellbeing in people living with dementia.

£21

could provide practical and emotional support to a person who has just received a diagnosis of dementia, by paying for a Dementia Support Worker to spend an hour with them at their home.
