Team IStructE (Janet, Elinor, Ala, Luisa, Emer & Anne-Marie) is a group that has come together through a knowledge of and interest in engineering and education. On 21st June we are running the Women's Nike 10k in East London to raise money for Cameroon Catalyst, an international development charity. Cameroon Catalyst supports UK-based engineering students to design and deliver sustainable projects in the rural North East of the country.
Over the last five years, students have worked in the village of Bambouti, where they have built housing, school buildings, a solar-powered electricity generator, a medical centre, and a carpentry and mechanical workshop. These projects have improved the lives of the local community in ways that were previously unforeseen. In addition, as part of the project, local Cameroonian people are taught techniques and skills.
In the next phase of its work, Cameroon Catalyst will focus on making much-needed improvements to water and sanitation in several villages across North East Cameroon. In this part of the country, life expectancy is below average for Sub-Saharan Africa and only half the population has access to clean water.
The charity is entirely run by volunteers and students involved in designing and construction in Cameroon cover their own costs. All money raised therefore, is spent directly on the project and for the benefit of the Cameroonian people.
