Simon, Mark and I are doing the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 to raise awareness and funds for a charity called Small Steps. Small Steps helps children with special needs, aged from birth to 5 years, work on all areas of their development, using the principles of conductive education. My Godson George has Down's Syndrome and attends Small Steps where they help him developing his motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination, communication and social skills amongst other things. Having spoken with George's parents about it they have told me what an invaluable resource Small Steps is to them and to George.
The children that attend Small Steps have cerebral palsy, other forms of motor impairment, syndromes or sensory impairment. They need a great deal of extra stimulation and assistance to help them reach even the most basic milestones. At Small Steps, a teacher, conductor and physiotherapist lead both parent and child through a structured programme designed to help each child achieve individualised developmental steps. The work of Small Steps is truly inspirational and we would be extremely grateful for your support for this very worthy cause. Small Steps is a free service and receives no statutory funding, so is solely dependent on charitable grants, fundraising and donations. No matter what the amount, every little bit donated will make a big difference! Please dig deep and help Small Steps continue their amazing work enhancing the lives of disabled children and their families. Thank you.
The Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 is a 100 mile (160km) bike ride through the roads of London and Surrey following basically the 2012 Olympic Games Road Race course.
Starting from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London, cyclists head past Canary Wharf, through the City of London before crossing the River Thames at Chiswick, passing through Richmond Park and crossing Hampton Court Bridge before entering the Surrey countryside before tackling the biggest ascent on the route at Leith Hill. After descending towards Dorking, it's onto the next challenge: the world-famous zig-zags of Box Hill. Heading north through Leatherhead, Oxshott and Esher the route takes riders back into London through Kingston and over Putney Bridge to cross the River Thames again before following the river along the Embankment, heading past some of London’s most famous landmarks as it makes its way across Parliament Square and up Whitehall. The route then swings left at Trafalgar Square, with riders streaming under Admiralty Arch before a spectacular finish on The Mall after 100 miles of exhausting effort.
