'Reclaim The Streets'...M41 Motorway...London...13th July 1996... A2 print.

Jazz musicians play under the watchful eye of frustrated Police on the M41 motorway during the massive RTS demo that closed down the motorway between Shepherds Bush and the Westway in support of the need for action to prevent climate destruction .

The Reclaim the Streets movement began in 1991. Characterised as a non-violent resistance movement with an anti-road objective, its mission was to confront corporate dominance resulting from globalisation and cars as our main form of transport. The movement used street parties fusing rave with carnival and direct action occupation as a form of political protest, strategies that can be seen today within the XR movement.

The 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Act criminalised free parties, festivals, travellers, squatters and peaceful protest along with an entire culture. West Country photographic artist Matthew Smith (AKA Mattko) documented the before, during and after of that process in a book, Exist to Resist.

Together with sound system Sunnyside he travelled the UK documenting how rave’s outsider scene connected with eco-protest and grassroots activism throughout the 90s up to the present day. Matt's work on recent social history has been published nationally and internationally achieving support and recognition in both mainstream media and academic circles.

Matthew's work was last exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, he is currently involved in a number of future exhibition and book projects

The print is a one off shown at the Saatchi Gallery's Sweet Harmony summer show about rave in 2019 which was subsequently reclaimed by the artist due to non-payment of the artists involved.

The print comes signed, embossed and personalised with handwritten bit of history of the back plus a COA to confirm provenance and a copy of the Cease and Desist notice used to facilitate return of the work. The print is 75cm x50cm.
