The Trainees
John and Richard have both participated in the Mac 4x4 challenge twice before, Richard in 2013 with Andrew and his Landrover Amo and John in 2012 with PJ and his Landrover Bessy and then together in Richard’s Ranger in 2014 when they won the trophy for the best placed team from Aberystwyth.
Both enjoy being out and about in the woods and on the green lanes of Wales and the borders.
They have worked together on a number of projects, not least of which was as part of the team that did a complete engine swap including fuel conversion to a friend’s Landrover in 42 hours over a weekend. That vehicle was Darwin, this year not competing, as she will be having a chassis swap mere days before the competition.
The Mac 4x4
The "Mac 4x4" is a "challenge" for 4x4 enthusiasts. It aims at testing navigational, orienteering and observation skills, with on and off road sections - depending on conditions, and endurance by day and night. A "team" consists of two people and it is strongly recommended that both are competent, licensed and insured to drive the vehicle during the event. It is intended to be a testing long weekend of fun covering between 400 and 1000 miles with various "tests" en route. Teams are asked to commit to raising a minimum sponsorship of £600 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Competitors are responsible for their own fuel and sustenance en route. The costs of organising the event is borne by the entry fee. So all the money that you pledge goes directly to Macmillan. Last year, being the thirteenth that the event has run managed to result in the event having raised over a million pounds for Macmillan.
