Story

University of Leicester Islamic Society have teamed up with PennyAppeal and pledged to help raise as much as possible for the Rohingya people during our Charity Week! You'll see our team fundraising target on the right. Your donation can really help us smash this goal, a small contribution can bring about a big change!

More than one million Rohingya Muslims in Arakan state, Burma, are
today living in apartheid conditions.

Much of the countryside in Arakan is awash with concentration
camps, the grim result of a targeted programme which has seen Muslims killed
and villages razed to the ground.

Arguably worse is the plight of those who have chosen to flee the
persecution.

Thousands, in their attempt to reach to Bangladesh, Malaysia,

Thailand and elsewhere, have been shot at, imprisoned, tortured or left
out to die at sea.

The Rohingya are now trapped between repression in their homeland
and abuse in neighbouring countries. It is up to us to respond and show them
that they have not been forgotten.

"Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by
day, in secret and in public, have their reward with their Lord: on them shall
be no fear, nor shall they grieve." [2:274]

The ayah above beautifully explains why we should strive  to
charitable. Bounties with Allah that we can't even imagine, on a day when the
mother will run from her child, the brother will not care for his brother - on
that day, those who engaged in giving charity will have no fear nor shall
they grieve. And if the people could ask for something they could come back to
this world for - it would be to give charity. And the people of Rohingya need
your charity, fast.
