On the 22nd October members of the university of Portsmouth swim team will be trading our hats and goggles for our running shoes, and taking part in the 10 mile Great South Run. 

The ASA revealed that 1 in 3 children in the U.K. have never learnt to swim. As members of the swim team we are lucky to have learnt to swim and for many of us this has shaped who we are today. Swimming means a lot to all of us, from keeping fit to making our family and coaches proud. Swimming has brought us success, friendships and safety around the water.. something every child should have.  

We have chosen to support the charity Level Waters, as we believe every child deserves a fair start in sports. Level Waters gives this to children with disabilities by using our donations to pay for facilities, equipment and teachers to provide one to one swimming lessons. The support of this charity enables disabled children to play safety in the water, experience other water sports.. and even go on to be Paralympians one day!

Our fundraising can help other children just like Thomas...

“Level Water has done much more for Thomas than help him swim. Knowing he is good at swimming has made him more confident to try other activities,” Phil, Thomas’s Dad.

When he was five Thomas went deaf. No one knows why. But Thomas loves swimming, mostly because he doesn't have to be able to hear anyone. With Level Water’s help Thomas learnt to swim and has recently taken on his own fundraising challenge to swim a mile. He completed this recently and raised £2,200 for the charity. Thomas’ aim – just like the people swimming for Level Water at the Dart- was to get more disabled children swimming so they too can benefit from lessons with Level Water.
