Story

Vikki Askew died on Wednesday 9 March 2016

Vikki was Head of Sixth Form at James Allen’s Girls’ School
in Dulwich, she was Head of Community Action in the school and Chair of the Independent Schools’ Council Working Party on Community Action.  Vikki was also the Deputy Head of JAGS between September 1999 and August 2004.

Vikki had been taking students out to work with disabled and
disadvantaged children and young people in Romania since 1996.  This year was to be her twenty first.   She became involved in the Libra Foundation in 2013 joining the charity’s summer project in July 2014.

At the end of her visit to Barlad in July 2014 Vikki wrote about seeing many students transformed by the Romania projects and the profound
and long-lasting effect it has on so many of them.  She spoke too about the “light bulb moments” from the children; a smile from an autistic child, the tears from one who had never listened to classical music before and the delight and pride in the faces of children who completed a task set for them in, perhaps, sport or art.  As Vikki taught us at the time, the Romanians have a word for it “Minunat”: Wonderful!

Vikki was an exceptional woman, who made a real difference
to the lives of so many, both in the UK and in Romania.  As one of her past pupils said, “she was committed, determined and driven;
she was the rock of JAGS Sixth Form and key in the Romania projects. She was brilliant, passionate and a devoted teacher. She will truly be missed”.
