Hi guys
for those of you that don't know us, we are Andrea and Emily and we are nursing assistants at the Bristol children's hospital. we work on the outpatients department and i'm a disability link nurse.
Coming into hospital for any child can be a daunting experience but for those with learning disabilities it can be made even worse due to the noisy and busy environment causing increased anxiety for them. Many of the children we look after with learning disabilities have sensory impairments meaning they have increased sensitivity to their senses. Because of this as a department we are trying to become more inclusive for all of the children we cater for.
To enable this we have been under taking Makaton training and are in the process of having visual Makaton displays put up around the department to sign post various things such as toilet, nurse doctor etc. On top of this we are fundraising for a specific area within the department for children with sensory impairments.
The benefit of this area will be enormous for the children and their families whom we provide care for. The waiting are we have is large and often noisy which can be very over whelming. By creating an area specifically for these children it will allow us to ensure their time within our care has gone as smoothly as possible for both them and their families. We already have special toys for children with sensory impairments but they often miss out on getting the full benefit of the toys due to the noisy and often stressful experience.
In order to help raise money for this area we are planning many events to help contribute towards it. I have signed up to participate in a sky dive on the 16th of September, and on the 17th of September Chris will be participating in the Bristol half marathon, with the help of above and beyond. Any contributions will be very gratefully received to help us provided to best possible care for every child that comes into our department.
