Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Combat Stress really is a worthy charity, and it needs your help now more than ever. Being in the Army myself, I'm well aware that active duty can leave servicemen and women profoundly traumatised without any physical injuries. This is where Combat Stress provides unique support.
Combat Stress is the only charity to specialise in supporting ex-servicemen and women who are suffering from a combat-related psychological injury, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Combat Stress has helped 85,000 veterans since it was founded in 1919, and it is recognised by the NHS as the only charity in this field. There are 8,000 clients currently receiving care, and Combat Stress acquires about 600 new clients each year. With the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, this figure is likely to increase. Right now our forces are being exposed to the highest levels of sustained combat since the post-war campaigns in Malaya and Korea - it is unsurprising that the charity's youngest client is only 19 years old.
Will Andy make it I hear you say? Although not exactly an 'elite' runner, I am not a total newcomer to marathon running, having completed the Dublin Marathon last year. I know that London will be just as tough; you can train as hard as you like, but once the 'wall' gets you, you are firmly in the pain locker. I am not seeking your sympathy, just your hard earned cash. I'll put in the hard yards in training and in the race, but I need your help to raise funds for Combat Stress. It will really drive me on to know that you are backing me, and that the charity is relying on me.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Combat Stress will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. My fundraising target is £1700, but with your help I know we can do even better.
Please sponsor me now! Even better - sponsor me and then forward this e-mail to your family and friends. I promise to buy you a beer the next time we meet.
Many thanks for your support. Combat Stress and I appreciate it.
