Story
Ladies and Gentlemen - thank you for visiting this page. This is a 105 mile, off-road race across Scotland over two days. It is going to be difficult and hurt quite a lot. Not much more to add to that. I will be accompanied by my good friend and experienced triathlete Rob Reynolds.
I am competing for a cause now close to me. Unique is the UK’s only registered charity for families affected by rare chromosome disorders. www.rarechromo.co.uk
Rare chromosome disorders involve missing, extra or rearranged genetic material on one or more of a person’s chromosomes. Many of those affected are born sick and disabled, unable to walk or talk. Some only find out they are affected when they come to have children of their own. Their rarity means that information about the disorders is scarce.
When my close friend Louise Succar's daughter Poppy was diagnosed in March 2015 at just over a year old, it became clear how little funding and publicity such rare conditions receive. Poppy has Idic chromosome 15 syndrome, which occurs in just 1 in 30,000 newborns and has a wide range of symptoms that will affect her for the rest of her life.
I originally decided to test myself with this endurance challenge to prove that i could. But I am now absolutely running for Poppy and others like her, in the hope that they may in some small way benefit.
