On July 20th 2013 a team of runners ran the length of the Mary Jones walk a distance of 28.8 miles from the site of her cottage in Llanfihangel-y-Pennant to the Thomas Charles house in Bala. It was a warm day for running with temperatures going up to the upper 20s. But we made it. But there's still time to make a donation towards the work of the Bible Society.
This is the second year we have done the run in honour of a girl who aged 15 walked barefoot through the Welsh hills with 5 years savings so she could buy a bible of her own. Mary Jones ran home with 3 bibles (given by an astonished minister Thomas Charles) who was so inspired by Mary's dedication that he went on with others to found the Bible Society which works to make sure that the bible is made available to those who can least afford one.
The run breaks down into 5 stages through some of the most beautiful countryside in Wales. So runners ran individual stages. One runner ran the whole distance!
That evening we gathered in Llanycil churchyard to give thanks for the lives of all those who in the past made it possible for people to read the bible in their own language. Next year we'll be back to do it all over again. Watch this space!
