Chas' Retirement Fundraiser

After 22 years with Tall Ships Youth Trust, I have decided to retire! To mark this momentous occasion, I am raising funds to enable more young people who have sailed with the Trust to come back and train as volunteers.

Story

I joined Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly known as the Sail Training Association, on 22 October 1999, on a day release from the British Army. On 1 January 2000, I became a fulltime member of the team and have dedicated the last 22 years to the personal development of thousands of young people.

To mark this momentous occasion, I would like to leave a lasting legacy by setting up a personal fundraiser to enable more young people who have sailed with the Trust to come back and train as volunteers. My sincere desire is to financially support those recommended during their first voyage to benefit and progress further by participating in the Trust's volunteering programme.

Scott Mackenzie (17), from The Limes College Pupil Referral Unit, said: "I would love for funding to be provided for me to come back for volunteer training, and I'd really appreciate it. It would be beneficial for my mental health because it would mean that I'd be outdoors, doing something constructive, rather than staying home. I wouldn't have the opportunity without this support."

By embarking on this pathway, young people will be given plenty of opportunity to use their new skills to guide and inspire future cohorts experiencing their first voyage. They will help by reinforcing the importance of skills, such as team working, effective communication and positive management of their feelings. In turn this will help the young volunteers to continue to build their own confidence, self-esteem and aspirations, through helping others and improving their overall wellbeing.

Sailing has been in my blood since I was 12 and I have seen first-hand the many beneficial outcomes achieved on the water. This is why I would like to help many more young people long after my retirement. Many of the skills young develop are transferred to their everyday lives, raising their aspirations and increasing their employability.

To mark my departure, please consider making a donation to the Young Volunteer Training Fund so many more young people are given the chance to continue their personal development and realise their true potential in life.

Thank you!
