Story

Our simple solutions make a huge difference. Your support right now will help families impacted by this disaster and others around the world.

Two ferocious hurricanes have slammed into Honduras, Nicaragua and other parts of Central America

On 3rd November, Hurricane Eta made landfall, causing extreme damage in Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and beyond. Its heavy rains and resulting flooding and landslides have torn down homes during a time when families need shelter the most to protect themselves from coronavirus.

Hurricane Eta has left families reeling after it battered Central America. Now, Hurricane Iota brings another wave of destruction across the same region.

What's drawing closer is a bomb - President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández.

ShelterBox is responding to thousands of families in Honduras after Hurricane Eta, and remains ready to support them as Hurricane Iota threatens more catastrophic damage along a similar path.

It is the strongest hurricane of the year, breaking records by being the 30th named storm of this years Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Over 55,000 people are staying in temporary collective centres in Honduras, a number that will rise with evacuations and displacements from Iota. We are extremely concerned about the threat to families who have already survived one devastating storm, and the potential for coronavirus to spread across the affected regions.

These disasters will put more strain on the health and social care systems still struggling to cope with COVID-19. Honduras has seen 2,804 recorded deaths from coronavirus and more than 100,000 confirmed cases. Eta and Iota have also come during the regions rainy season, which often also sees spikes in seasonal illnesses such as flu and vector-borne diseases including dengue, zika and chikungunya.

We cannot stress enough the importance of shelter during this pandemic - please help us protect families by supporting our vital work today.

At ShelterBox we specialise in providing emergency shelter and accompanying household items to help families and communities rebuild their lives after disaster.
