Story

It goes without saying that it has been a difficult year for everyone.

For many LMH students, it has meant a year of disrupted education, separation from their friends, confusion around A-Level results, and graduating into an uncertain job environment. As you know, university is a defining time in a young person's life, and we are determined that every LMH student will come through this year feeling fulfilled and supported by the College.

We are asking for your help to fund three important projects at LMH: Study Skills Support, the Hardship Fund, and Welfare & Wellbeing Support. These are essential initiatives, and the demand placed on our resources this year has been exceptionally high. Read below or watch our video to learn more about how these funds benefit students. You can also visit the LMH website for alternate methods of giving or email development@lmh.ox.ac.uk with any questions:

Why does LMH need my help?

These projects are only possible thanks to alumni contributions. Your gift will help to sustain and grow these vital projects and help LMH students to thrive in their studies. We are using JustGiving for this appeal so that you can see how your gift becomes part of something bigger for our students.

If you have never made a gift to LMH before, now is an excellent time to add your support. We would love to see 100 alumni making their first ever donation to LMH. Read on to see the impact just a single donation can have.

If you graduated from LMH in 2019 or 2020, your first gift to the College will be matched by a generous Young Alumni Fund at the University. Single gifts are matched 1:1, meaning that your contribution is doubled.

What projects does this appeal support?

Study Skills Support

The Oxford Study Skills Centre at LMH (OSSC) teaches students essay-writing, time-management, and subject-specific skills. This year the OSSC has produced special resources to help students adjust to studying remotely.

The OSSC teaches students the academic skills required to succeed in their course. This helps to build the student's confidence, fills in any gaps in prior knowledge, and enables tutors to focus on their subject. LMH is the only Oxford College with a dedicated study skills centre, but as the value of this type of learning gathers recognition we are certain we will not be the last.

If 100 alumni made a gift of just £20 each, we would have enough to cover over 16 hours of one-to-one teaching costs.

Welfare & Wellbeing

LMH has a fantastic support team, made up of the Welfare Fellow, the College Nurse, the Junior Deans, JCR and MCR Representatives, and a network of trained peer supporters. They provide a combination of preventative self-care resources and emergency care.

A fifth of Oxford students have a mental health diagnosis with the most prominent conditions being depression and anxiety. Our Welfare & Wellbeing team proactively help students maintain good mental health, and create an environment where students can raise concerns before they become crises.

If 100 alumni made a gift of just £20 each, we would already have enough to cover the cost of training three LMH Peer supporters.

The LMH Hardship Fund

The Hardship Fund provides emergency financial assistance to students in unforeseen financial hardship. Grants are applied for and awarded on a case by case basis.

Applications to the LMH Hardship Fund have soared during the pandemic. Housing issues, part-time job losses, and household income squeezes are among the myriad of pressures that students have faced this year.

If 100 alumni made a gift of £17 per month for one year, their donations would cover the average annual cost of the LMH Hardship grants.

Thank you to everyone who supports this appeal. Please consider sharing it with your LMH contemporaries.
