Story

This is our NEW campaign created on 21st July 2022.

Since our official launch on 7th May 2022 we've established a real presence on Ward L50 at Leeds Children's Hospital. The next few months will see lots more activity!

We hosted our first market stall at the hospital site, sharing news about our charity and raising our profile and a little money too!

We've taken charge of equipping the parent's kitchen on Ward L50 with a few essential food items for parents to help themselves-to and plan to replace and update the fridges in the near future.

Saturday 30 July saw us deliver our first 'Saturday Supper' to parents and carers. This has been extremely well received as it's so difficult for parents and carers to leave their critically ill children to access food and drinks to keep themselves focused and sustained. Our Saturday Suppers are sponsored by local businesses and private individuals who, in return, receive publicity before and after the food delivery.

We are starting engagement with hospital specialists around how we can support research into rare diseases and setting-up a dedicated area on our website for families to tell their stories and fundraise with their child, or in memory of their child, to make what is important to them happen.

In addition to kind donations, our supporters are becoming inspired to take on their own charity events - up-coming events, being arranged independently, include a runner in the Ultra100 (100 mile run!), three runners who are tackling the Yorkshire marathon, a school dance group who are holding a performance dedicated to Millie, a super-brave fundraising team who are doing a sky dive in the lake district on 29th October, pub quizzes and live music sessions.

Look out for information on our fabulous Winter ball on 26th November - book your tickets now!

We warmly welcome and encourage independent fundraisers - some of whom will link to our Just Giving site. The Millie Wright Children's Charity will support all related-activity with banners, t-shirts, information etc. Just ask!

To recap why we are doing this, it's in honour and memory of our beautiful Millie who we sadly lost on 21st August 2021.

Millie was an energetic, inspirational 13 year old from York who received treatment in Leeds Children's Hospital from March 2021 to August 2021.

After becoming seriously ill, Millie and her parents spent several months on Ward L50 (liver and renal) and later on Wards L31 - L33 (oncology).

Whilst on Wards L31 - L33 Millie's family received hands-on charitable support from the Leeds-based Candlelighters Trust but reflected that no similar hands on support had been available to them on Ward L50. To address this inequality they set-up the Millie Wright Children's Charity to bridge the gap for families with critically ill children on Ward L50. The charity will also support the families of children with non-malignant haematological conditions via clinics at the hospital.

It will take some time and buckets full of charitable donations to able to match the services which the Candlelighters Trust provides, however, the Millie Wright Children's Charity has already made good progress thanks to the donations of kind supporters like you.

About the charity

Our vision is for every family supporting a child with a life threatening diagnosis to receive hands-on charitable support.
