Story
Around the world there are academics who face persecution, violence and conflict. Many of them are in immediate danger of arrest, injury or even death. The situation for those with children is even more precarious.
On Tuesday 19th November, Pembroke is running a Giving Day. We're teaming up with CARA, the Council of At-Risk Academics, to support an Academic (and their family if they have one) to escape to the safety of Pembroke where they can continue to work. The CARA Fellowship programme supports academics who are at risk in their home countries with two year fellowships at a British university. Currently there are about 100 academics looking to escape to a place of safety where they can continue to work. The most urgent need is to place families because of the greater cost.
Some hope to return home one day. CARA's support makes it possible for them to connect, during their period of exile, with colleagues within the wider academic community, facilitating collaboration, enhancing skills and ending isolation, so that when the moment comes, they are equipped to go back and help re-build their societies.
For others the risk will always be too great for them to return. If we are successful in raising the funds needed Pembroke and CARA can work with the academic to build a new life and career, where they can use their talents and skills for the good of all. With YOUR help Pembroke can offer that support.
With a substantial one to one matching fund from an anonymous donor, your donation can go even further. For every £1 given, £2 will be donated to Pembroke, helping us to achieve the goal to enable an At-Risk academic and their family to stay at Pembroke in safety.
Where will the money go?
The annual cost to Pembroke is £30k per annum. This includes accommodation for the academic (and their family if they have one) within the College and a stipend. We have set ourselves a challenging target, and one which needs to be achieved within an extremely tight time frame, but we feel confident that working together the College community can achieve it.
