ABA Commission on Homelessness & Poverty

Historic levels of income inequality, evictions, and disparate treatment of communities of color are forcing renters from their homes and into the streets. Advocate for those experiencing poverty and counteract the criminalization of homelessness.

Story

Your gift to the ABA Commission on Homelessness & Poverty supports technical assistance to lawyers and providers on the frontlines serving youth, families, veterans, and individuals experiencing poverty in low-income housing, shelters, and on the streets. With a focus on upstream intervention and prevention, the Commission develops public policy and implements best practices for the ABA's community-based network of partners who work tirelessly to counter the injustices of poverty and homelessness.

Through the Homeless Court Program, the Commission advocates for alternatives to the criminalization of homelessness. The Commission provides technical assistance and trainings across the country to communities implementing the homeless court model, which connects individuals with community services instead of court fines and fees.

As the pandemic continues, families are now struggling to maintain housing amid the eviction crisis. Through the Homeless Youth Legal Network, the Commission advocates for homeless youth and families by increasing access to legal services - ensuring kids get a roof over their heads, equal access to a good education, access to a doctor when needed, and the chance to grow and thrive. Recent events have generated unprecedented public awareness of income inequality, children in poverty, and disparate treatment of communities of color and the Commission is protecting those in desperate need of assistance.
