We are commissioning a bold, contemporary work of art relevant to our current time in the form of a stained glass window in the west tower of St Michael's Church, Blewbury. There hasn't been a new stained glass window in our church for more than 100 years and we now have the opportunity to install one.
The theme of the new window is a celebration of our village community with a focus on the church bells and the legacy of bell ringing throughout the centuries.
Richly coloured and echoing movement, dynamism and scale, the peal of eight bells are represented in the window design by a range of circular textured forms of glass of different sizes - symbolising the octave.
These strong forms reference the idea of sound waves travelling outwards over the village, wider community and landscape.
Reflecting light into the church and enhancing the bold beauty of the window will be layered, mirrored glass banners. They are designed to enhance the effect of the window without competing with it and add an additional dimension to the space; a visual echo of the resonating bells.
The artist's impression is shown below.
We have already raised a significant sum towards the installation of the window and are seeking on-line personal donations to reach our fundraising target of £75,000.
Everyone in our community will have been touched by the sound of bells and/or by the associated Church events at some point. Therefore, in addition to grants that we are already applying for, we are asking for on-line personal donations to help with the project and matched funding.
You can donate any amount, large or small, as one person, as a couple, an organisation, or as a family.
By donating to the window fund your name can be recorded in a book, which will contain the story of the Stained Glass Window from concept to installation. This will become an historical document and a record of who was connected to our Community leading up to 2020.
If you have a dedication for your donation, please let us know in your comments so that this can also be recorded in the book. You might wish to donate in memory of someone; to mark a wedding, funeral, christening or confirmation in St Michaels; to celebrate an anniversary of some kind; because you love art; because you care for our medieval church; or just because you enjoy living in our community!
