Story

SportsAble is a club where members do not let disability dictate what we can't do, rather we focus on what we can do and helps others do the same.

Many of our members were on a very different journey before they came to us. Some were isolated, many overweight, nearly all were depressed - and they lead their lives without a clear purpose and focus. After joining SportsAble, they make friends, feel more positive and rediscover themselves, learning new skills and starting a new pathway towards physical and emotional wellbeing.

Incredibly, in our 46-year existence, some of our members have discovered a love and talent for sport and excelled. We have sent Paralympians from our ranks to every Paralympics bar one and count Paralympic gold medallists, world champions and national champions amongst our number.

But more importantly we provide sporting and social opportunities for all. Each week, we provide our members with a wide variety of opportunities to participate in sport, fitness, creative arts and social events. We are the only multi-sports and events disability club in the South East with its own clubhouse, providing such life-changing service.

SportsAble provides so much more than just sport. According to Scope (disability charity), 53% of disabled people say their disability makes it harder to make friends. (Scope). 68% of SportsAble members say they have made new friendships through the Club (2018 Impact Report). During Lockdown, 58% of our members did not socialise with anyone outside of their family; 96% of our members want to return to SportsAble after the pandemic. During Lockdown, 28% of our members were unable to do any moderate exercise at all and 95% say that SportsAble helps them get active despite having a long-term health condition. (2020 member survey)

The stark reality is that disability can also impact a family's finances dramatically. To ensure our Club is affordable to all, our annual membership is just £75 and gives members access to all activities. The real cost of an annual membership to SportsAble is £800 per year.

Last year we were supposed to celebrate our 45th Anniversary, but unfortunately the Club found itself closed for the first time in its history. If SportsAble can raise enough money to keep it open until this year's Tokyo Paralympics in August, we will be winning the battle to stay open, but we need to raise a total of £46,000 to do so.

It is clear we have a very passionate and motivated set of members, volunteers and loyal supporters and with your help, we believe we can survive and continue changing the lives of disabled people and their families.

But we cant delay. We need to take action immediately if the charity is to survive.
