Story

HERITAGE HEROES NEEDED !

Do YOU have what it takes to become a HERITAGE HERO ?

We have been offered a Slingsby T38 Grasshopper glider which has been held in a dusty storage area for many years and now needs to find its forever home at our Museum.

The T38 Grasshopper fleet was fully RAF registered and was intended as a primary effects of controls airframe trainer for use by the Air Training Corps.

Post second World War the RAF identified the need to accelerate the pilot recruitment and assessment process and this was supported by the introduction of airframes such as the T38 Grasshopper to the Air Cadet organisation, which at the time was the ideal recruitment and assessment organisation for potential future RAF aircrew.

A high percentage of career RAF pilots during the post war years and into the cold war era would have first experienced the thrill of flight in an airframe such as the T38 Grasshopper.

In our continuing desire to tell the story of the RAF in Scotland from 1913 to today and beyond the Slingsby T38 Grasshopper has a positive place within the timeline of RAF history.

The Grasshopper will be fully restored to Museum Display Standard by the current owners who are a professional heritage aircraft restoration company with many years experience in restoring heritage airframes to a high quality Museum standard.

This company are supporting our endeavours by generously offering to absorb a high percentage of the costs involved with this project.

On delivery it will then take its place within our static aircraft display as a part of the continuing story of Montrose Air Station as an initial and advanced flying training station.

HOW CAN YOU HELP ?

Montrose Air Station Museum is looking for HERITAGE HEROES to step up and help save the day as well as save a valuable piece of RAF Heritage.

We have been offered the unique opportunity to acquire this unique airframe for a total cost of £2000 . . . . this amazing price includes a full recovering and repainting to original specifications to a very high Museum Display standard as well as all transportation and reassembly costs.

To minimize the financial impact on museum funds we would like to finance this acquisition purely by generous donations from our supporters.

As a HERITAGE HERO your name will be added to the HERITAGE HERO Board that will be displayed next to the T38 Grasshopper to announce to all our future visitors the important role your donation and act of HERITAGE HEROISM has played towards saving this heritage airframe.

As we continue to fight to survive the financial effects of the World wide pandemic it is only with the help of our HERITAGE HEROES that we will be able to awake from the pandemic once the all clear has sounded with a fresh and viable museum containing new and relevant exhibits.
