Story
Building Futures East charity has been running for over 16 years supporting community development in the East End of Newcastle upon Tyne. We're based in Walker which is one of the most deprived wards in the North East and the people we support overcome many challenges on a daily basis. Even before the pandemic and cost of living crisis, 42% of residents in Walker struggled to access food. Walker ward has the highest number of deaths from respiratory diseases in Newcastle and 1/3 of the population live with long-term health conditions or disabilities. Walker has the city's lowest life expectancy rate for women and the second-lowest for men, a difference of over 12 years compared with the most affluent ward in the city.
Families in Newcastle are struggling to make ends meet. Rising food and energy prices, plus the long term impact of covid-19 means people continue to struggle to put food on the table. Our emergency foodbank delivers parcels directly to people in greatest need in Walker and Byker.
Our @eastendwomen foodbank was established at the start of the pandemic & we're really proud of what we've achieved since then. You can see some figures below to show how our support has impacted the local community. Sadly though, we still need help to keep this work going as our running costs & the cost of purchasing food have increased too.
In addition to food parcels, we also provide families and households with hygiene and essential period products, baby items and pet food when we can.
During the winter months we will be providing warm spaces at our offices & will provide hot refreshments where the need is identified. All of this is reliant on donations and other fundraising. Any donation that you are able to give will go directly to the running of our foodbank, including maintaining stock levels and covering essential volunteer expenses. You can see more photos of our work in the gallery at the top of the page and follow us on Instagram Twitter or Facebook for daily updates.
Thank you so much for your continued support; together we are stronger.
