Yasmin required life saving spinal surgery in Barcelona to fuse her spine from C0-T1 after her cervical spine was left unstable due to a condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. With your help Just4Children managed to raise enough money for surgery but we now need your help to fundraise for her recovery so she can achieve her dreams.
Surgery went ahead on Thursday 20th June after 3 days of intensive tests. They discovered Yasmins left sided jugular veins had collapsed which meant that surgery now needed to include the drilling of C1 to relieve pressure. Yasmin was the second person to undergo such surgery during fusion.
Yasmin went to surgery at 08.00. We were called to the ICU at 17.40. Everything had gone ok but Yasmin would be required to stay 2 nights in ICU.
Yasmins MCAS was an additional problem throughout as she reacted to most of the standard medications used. Recovery has gone well with the exception of eating. Yasmin is at present unable to swallow food. She is due to have tests to determine the cause and recovery. Yasmins left arm and shoulder are causing immense pain due to swelling after the dissection of the muscles during surgery.
As a result of the recovery Yasmin will not be discharged to the rehabilitation unit tomorrow as planned, but will remain in hospital until the test results are investigated and the pain is manageable.
We raised enough money for surgery but still have along recovery road, as the time to discharge has been extended and more tests/treatment will be required costs have started to rise.
Once Yasmin returns to the UK the hard work really starts. Yasmin has been told that she is not allowed to attend college for at least a year, determined as Yasmin is, she loves studying so is planning to do online studies, possibly law.
We still need the rest of the money to be raise in order to have a smooth, safe and successful recovery and we need to have adaptions made to suit her disability.
