Story

We're protecting thousands of worried and isolated older people under Coronavirus lockdown. Help us to keep on protecting older people by giving generously.

As the Coronavirus crisis deepens, older people are telling us that they need our help. We can never allow a single elderly person to go hungry during this crisis, or to feel that they have no-one to speak to for help. At Age UK Birmingham and Age UK Sandwell we are determined to be there for older people who need our help, and especially those with no-one else to turn to. We are providing a really vital lifeline, but we desperately need your help too.

Age UK Birmingham and Age UK Sandwell are creating a lifeline for those most at risk in our City and Borough. You can help too.

With your help, we can ensure the elderly don't go hungry. With your help, we can ensure our team of befrienders are on hand to call every older person who needs them. With your help, we can ensure older people get their prescriptions and stay healthy. Please give generously so we can raise £50,000 to protect older people in Birmingham and Sandwell in response to this continuing crisis. Don't forget that the 6 week period we are currently in will be at least 12 weeks for the over 70's and those with certain underlying health conditions.

You may be aware that the British Government is making £750 million available to charities. While this support is appreciated, unfortunately this will be split across hundreds of thousands of charities across the country, and will take time to filter down. Age UK Birmingham and Age UK Sandwell need  to protect older people right now. Donations are still essential to keep the emergency front line services running and to reach as many people as possible..

Every pound you donate means we can protect more people. Thank you.

A message from our CEO

Older people tell us that they feel scared and totally isolated by the new lock down and don't know where to turn. We have over 1,200 people waiting to be called by one of our befrienders. People like Florence, (89) with early onset dementia, who is concerned about her mental wellbeing, and knows that a regular call could make all the difference.

In these challenging times Age UK Birmingham and Age UK Sandwell has had to move swiftly in response to the current health crisis, and we have been working hard with our teams and our volunteers to redirect our resources to create the Emergency Services for Older People, their Carers and Families.

We will continue working hard to support all older people across our communities, and I would urge you to please circulate our offer of support amongst friends, family and colleagues, and to keep safe and well. I'd also like to say a huge thank you to the many offers to help, support and volunteer, as well as the kind financial donations we are receiving to support our effort.

Alison Beachim, CEO

We're reaching out to protect the 200,000 older people in Birmingham and Sandwell in social isolation with Emergency Services including Hot meals on wheels, a hotline with Information and Advice, a team of volunteers calling thousands of older people who are running out of food, medicines and have nobody else to call on, shopping, collecting prescriptions and linking older people to local support that they didn't know about.
