Story

As we celebrate Harvest and God's generous provision, we remember the many this year who are suffering from the effects of climate change or poor land use practices. With your support we can empower people to secure their own livelihoods and to cope if the worst should happen, while protecting the local, natural resources on which they depend.

Supporting sustainable livelihoods weaves through A Rocha's work of protecting wildlife and habitats, teaching children about the world around them, addressing issues of gender equality and improving the health and wellbeing of families. Here are just a few examples of how you can be part of making a difference:

Thousands fleeing the conflicts in Syria have settled in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, putting increasing pressure on green space and jobs. In response, A Rocha Lebanon is creating the Mekse Nature Park in partnership with the Municipality on a 3 ha plot of land. Refugees are employed to clear rubbish, provide security and landscape the area into what will in time be a safe, open space for recreation and environmental education, as well as a habitat for wildlife.

Dakatcha Woodlands is one of the most important sites for wildlife conservation in Kenya and home to two species of globally endangered birds. A Rocha Kenya's beekeeping programme is working with 100 farmers across five villages in the forest, equipping them to generate income by using local, natural resources without over-exploiting the habitat.

Fireless cookers are offering families in Uganda an affordable and environmentally friendly way to cook. These insulated baskets allow food to continue cooking and stay hot for several hours, using much less fuel, retaining more nutrients and saving hours spent in the kitchen, so that women have more control of their own time. They are simple to make and can also be sold to supplement the family income.

This Harvest, could you help A Rocha International to strengthen and support this work? Together we can make a difference!
