Story

Our story began in 2014 with just 84 learners and five teachers in South Africa. Today our education technology program supports 30,000 disadvantaged children and 900 teachers in 10 countries worldwide.

At the Breteau Foundation, we believe in working towards a world where every disadvantaged child can access quality education regardless of their background or location. And we do this by providing technology and educational content for children and comprehensive training for teachers and schools.

In 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic disrupted education, we witnessed the catastrophic obstacles to learning, experienced by the children we support. School closures not only amplified the problems of poverty, it shone a vivid light on the digital divide between those who have access to technology and connectivity, to those who don't. We shifted our support to homeschooling and initiated a programme to deliver tablet technologies packed with quality numeracy and literacy learning resources into homes.

Technology in education is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. A message reinforced by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in response to the pandemic and in support of the 463 million school children who cannot access remote learning due to lack of technology assets at home - the digital divide is the new face of inequality.

Every Technology Toolkit Helps

As we enter 2021, many schools remain closed, and others are only operating part time. Our focus on home-schooling remains critical, and we have committed funding to provide 2000 children with Technology Toolkits in South Africa and Lebanon where we have education-experienced teams on the ground. But we know, with your support, we can do so much more.

All donations help. Our appeal to you is to sponsor 1 technology toolkit, 5 technology toolkits or 10 technology toolkits.
